When you’ve learned the basics and gained important ideas about woodworking you can then focus on the type of woodworking you’re most interested in. You can further learn on this type by studying books or magazines that teach hands-on skills or the actual woodwork.
Attend Classes
Most experts recommend beginners to take classes. Attending woodworking classes in a local college or witnessing an actual demo from an experienced woodworker can give you a good background on the different types of tools used in woodworking and most especially the important techniques and safety tips that you need to apply later on. If you don’t feel like taking classes find an experienced woodworker then ask that person if you can assist in a project or just observe him work. Chances are that person will be happy to oblige. Most woodworkers like to talk about their craft and are pleased to share their knowledge with fellow woodworking enthusiasts.
Keep Projects Simple
As a beginner it’s advisable to start with simple projects that only require hand tools. This way you can get well oriented on the important basic skills such as measuring, cutting, joining and creating various shapes.
For brand new woodworkers, you can start with precut kits. These kits usually have precut wood and only require you to follow instructions on putting these pieces together by nailing, screwing, or gluing. Then you can move on to sanding and finishing your project. When you’re still uncomfortable with cutting your own wood to its desired length, you can rely on precut lumber. Just increase the difficulty of each project until you get the hang of it and can finally measure and cut your own wood.
Tips on Woodworking Tools
Keep your woodworking tools simple too. Most experts recommend buying additional tools only when you need them. A starter kit usually contains a printed list of tools needed that will mostly contain the following (which would normally cost you $250-$300):
- hammer
- tape measure
- clamp
- a set of chisels
- saw (for beginners a handsaw or circular saw is enough but some experts say that investing in table saw early on is important too)
- hand drill
- square
Remember to always go for tools of the best quality. One great tip is to invest in a few but high quality tools rather than buying numerous of the so-so kinds. High quality doesn’t always mean the most expensive, so you need to do some research on this.
